“South” has elements of country, rock, folk, and a few other things sprinkled in. Lots of guitar and lots of vocal harmonies. When I was trying to think of a name for the EP, the word “South” had been floating around frequently in my daily lexicon. I’d been reflecting on my upbringing in the American South, anticipating and planning a move south of the border to Mexico, and learning and building community around collective struggles and achievements in the Global South. The songs look at experiences, relationships, and changes I’ve made navigating those spaces and ideas.
I began writing the first two songs, “The Real Thing” and “Far and Wide,” 7 years ago, while the last two came quickly about a year ago. Not that I’ve gotten any faster at writing songs, just some songs take longer to cook. In that time, I’ve gotten to know myself a little better and how I’m situated in history. The older songs changed with me and the young guns came out firing in the situations I was living through. I love these songs and feel like they’re a part of me. I hope you enjoy them and can relate to the themes and imagery that come up.
All songs written, recorded and mixed by me. Mastered by Brian Murphree of Soundporter. Album artwork @lefthandedream.
"The Real Thing" is a reflection on trying to figure out what’s good and worthwhile in this life. The never ending process of realizing, unlearning, and refining an idea of purpose. It’s the first single off the EP, “South.”
